This September, POP UP 36 presents a solo exhibition of Spanish photographer Milena Villalón, focusing on her journeys to North Africa and the Middle East.
Unlike her previous work where intimate portraits played an important role, Milena shares in this exhibition a more personal view while travelling, drawing a line between documentary photography and visual poetry. Despite the unavoidable background of current social issues in those countries, Milena’s eye is focused on the ordinary, where objects and fleeting moments are important as people, loaded with symbolism and meaning marked by her memories and perception.
'When I travel, it is mostly an interior trip within myself. By looking at the mundane objects and what surrounds me, I get to know and explore what I carry inside. It is through the lens that I compose and dream about the reality in front of me. Using photography as a tool to investigate the interior, this exhibition explores what’s beyond photography and the image itself.'
